1986 Porsche Turbo Type 930: The "Grey Ghost"

The 1986 Porsche Turbo Type 930 marked a pivotal moment in Porsche's history, as it introduced turbocharging to the marque and set the stage for Porsche's first supercar. With an internal type number 930, this model became the foundation for a lineage of cars that continue to push performance boundaries today.

The "Grey Ghost" and Its Legacy

One of the most celebrated examples of the Type 930 is the "Grey Ghost", named for its rare Marble Grey color. This car has earned a stellar reputation on the concours circuit, winning numerous trophies throughout its career. Despite its extensive mileage—showing 131,000 miles when acquired by its current owner in 2000—it was driven an additional 20,000 miles before undergoing a complete restoration.

A Champion Restored

After its meticulous restoration, the Grey Ghost went on to become a three-time full-restoration national champion at Porsche Parade, previously known as The Manhattan Trophy. This is the highest concours honor awarded by the Porsche Club of America, solidifying the Grey Ghost’s legendary status. The car is owned and restored by Joseph DeMeo, who has played a key role in preserving its beauty and legacy.

With a total of 21,600 Turbos produced from 1975 to 1989, the Grey Ghost stands out as one of the most remarkable examples of the Type 930, both for its aesthetic appeal and its storied history.
